Hegel Everyday #6

Preface

13. (4/06/24) Old World - Substantial life - the forms of knowledge here don’t quite work fully yet they still have form and content.

Nascent Sciences - seem esoteric and understandable by only few individuals sometimes because it takes away the determinacy the old world has. But this is important for the development.

Real Science is OPEN - capable of being learned and apprehended by ALL - this is what science turns towards.

14. (4/6/24) Science as process - Knowledge that can account for itself (get over the epistemic circularity that is fundamental) - and for the historical process through which it emerged. Huge Undertaking.

Nascent science

  • not complete in details (not enough data) = content

  • not complete in articulation = form. real science should be able to articulate in satisfactory terms what its studying and itself as the method of study. i.e. become adequate to the things its studying.

One = old world, old science -> intelligible, wealth of the material.

Other = new world -> immediate rationality and divinity.

Old world is silenced often by force of truth e.g. Hippie culture and seeing the horrors of war or blustering e.g. Political Correctness being enforced. But the demands the new world makes are often not fulfilled to completion e.g. Hippie movement again. So the silence of old world is only half due to the triumph of the new world and otherwise mostly due to losing expectations in the new world to fulfill their demands or claims of rationality and divinity.

Sense Certainty

94. (4/6/24) We need to ask whether the object is the type of essence sense certainty claims it is. Ironically, the empiricist is intellectualizing about sense certainty when they say that the object is given to us and we just have to “take it in”. We can’t intellectualize about the object, but need to actually “reflect” and see what actually happens in sense certainty. It is empiricism of an even more radical kind.

95. (4/6/24) The “This” of sense certainty is the “here” and the “now”.

Let us suppose the “now” of sense certainty is truthful. Then we can test it by writing it down.

“A truth loses as much in writing it down as it does in preserving it”.

by writing it down we became vulnerable to it no longer being what it wasDefensiveness is an affective correlate of foundational epistemological problems. Why would you contest this experiment if you were secure about the fact that it is the truth.
